Senior Airman Peter J. Alicea-Correa, assigned to the 42nd Aerial Port Squadron's ramp section, arrived at Westover July 10 from basic training and his technical school. The young Airman said his favorite part of the work he does is seeing all the different equipment he gets to load and knowing that everything he puts on a plane goes to support troops downrange. The Port Dawg has been in the Air Force for just over a year and says he loves it at Westover. "It's a great place, I get lots of training and I work with a great set of guys," Airman Alicea-Correa said. "It makes me feel like I belong to a family, and that's one of the most important things about a job."

Staff Sgt. Erin Skura, an Air Reserve Technician with the 439th Maintenance Squadron, stands inside the tool cage at the Regionalized Isochronal Inspection Dock, Oct. 6. In addition to her position as an ART, Sergeant Skura is the proud mother of six-month-old Isabella, whose photos hang on the wall next to the crew chief's computer. "It's not so much that it's difficult, it's just tiring," Sergeant Skura said of being an ART and a mom. Despite the tiredness, she said she enjoys her job fixing planes at Westover. "The people are great. It's not always the same work and the exciting part is you never know what [discrepencies] you're going to find when you inspect [the plane]."

Lieutenant Patrick Maloney, 337th Airlift Squadron, is one of Westover's newest C-5 pilots. He arrived at the Patriot Wing in late August from Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where he finished the last phase of his two years of pilot training. Lt. Maloney has been flying one training flight a week and doing computer and simulator training since coming here, but thinks he will get to fly his first mission soon. "I'm looking forward to some overseas trips, maybe flying some humanitarian aid missions and eventually upgrading to aircraft commander," he said.

Senior Airman Justin Grenon, a records manager at the 439th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, pulls medical records inside the Air Base Clinic at Westover. Airman Grenon has been working in records management for a year and a half and says it can be tedious and never-ending, but he takes pride in the work he does. "I like helping others and I work with some great people," he said.

Senior Airman Adam Conley, with the 439th Services Squadron as a member of the Fitness Center staff, performs his hourly checks in the fitness rooms. He said he is responsible for running the daily operations at the gym, keeping track of personnel using the center and checking out fitness equipment to users. "I really like the customer service aspect of the job; seeing the same faces every day and getting to know everyone on an individual basis is great," said Airman Conley. The fitness center journeyman has been at Westover four years, deployed to Joint Base Balad, Iraq, in 2008 and is currently activated here in support of surge operations in Afghanistan. "The best part of this activation has been seeing fellow Westover Airmen and it makes you feel good at the end of the day knowing you support them."

Lance Cpl. Marlon Wesh, Marine Wing Support Squadron 472 Detachment Bravo, joined the Marine Corps in December 2008. He is an administration specialist, ensuring pay and entitlements are met for fellow marines. "It's stressful enough when you're deployed, and worrying about whether or not you're being paid or tracking your benefits is unnecessary stress. So I make sure that when any Marine walks into our office it isn't because we messed up," LCpl. Wesh said. "I always knew that at some point I wanted to be in the military. I don't know why, but the service just called to me," he said.

SSgt. Chris Peterson is an Avionics Guidance and Control Electrician with the 439th Maintenance Squadron, Avionics Flight, who works on the navigational systems in the C-5. “I work on systems such as the Auto Pilot, flight controls, Global Positioning System, etc.” he said. Sergeant Peterson is an Air Reserve Technician who enlisted at age 17. “I have a lot of family who have been in the military and my father and grandfather were both in the Air Force,” he says. “Having such a strong family military history is a major reason why I enlisted. I guess you could say I wanted to follow in their footsteps.” When he isn't working, he enjoys riding around on his Yamaha R6 and playing recreational sports such as softball and flag football. As a crew chief in the 439th Maintenance Squadron one of Tech. Sgt. Sharon Mekal's duties is to change old C-5 tires, which she has to remove from the rim before replacing them with new ones. To do this she uses specialized equipment to break the pressure bead on the tire to remove it safely.
