Tolling of the Bell
Westover Assistant Fire Chief David Benedetti tolls the bell, three sets of five, during the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the base flag pole, Sept. 11, 2014. Long before telephones and radios, fire departments used the telegraph to communicate so when a firefighter died in the line of duty, the fire alarm office would tap out a special signal. That signal was five measured dashes, pause, five measured dashes, pause, then five final dashes. This became universally known as the Tolling of the Bell and is now used as a sign of honor and respect for all firefighters who had made the ultimate sacrifice. (U.S. Air Force photo/SSgt.
