Firemen and Airmen of Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass. remember lives lost on September 11, 2001, in a ceremony September 11, 2017, on the ellipse. 16 years ago today, four passenger airliners were hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists. Two of these aircraft, American Airlines Flight 11, and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. A third aircraft, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. And a fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, which was initially steered toward Washington D.C., but crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania after passengers tried to overcome the hijackers.
