Westover Assistant Fire Chief David Benedetti tolls the bell, three sets of five, during the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the base flag pole, Sept. 11, 2014. Long before telephones and radios, fire departments used the telegraph to communicate so when a firefighter died in the line of duty, the fire alarm office would tap out a special signal. That signal was five measured dashes, pause, five measured dashes, pause, then five final dashes.
