Westover Assistant Fire Chief David Benedetti tolls the bell, three sets of five, during the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the base flag pole, Sept. 11, 2014. Long before telephones and radios, fire departments used the telegraph to communicate so when a firefighter died in the line of duty, the fire alarm office would tap out a special signal. That signal was five measured dashes, pause, five measured dashes, pause, then five final dashes. Brig. Gen. Steven Vautrain’s first attempt at a final C-5 flight did not work out as planned Aug. 19. The aircraft developed a mechanical problem while doing practice approaches at Bangor International Airport, Maine, and had to return to Westover early. Further complications on final approach resulted in the crew declaring an emergency and having to shut down and egress on the runway. The Westover Fire Department responded, declared the aircraft safe, and it was towed off the runway. Gen. Vautrain successfully completed his fini flight two days later on Aug. 21.
