An inaugural awards dinner put the spotlight on five Patriot Wing Airmen, two civilians, and a new honorary commander Jan. 9 at the Westover Club.

In years past, senior leadership has included the Patriot Wing’s annual awards program at the top of the new year’s Commander’s Call agenda. Hundreds of Airmen huddled in the Base Hangar for those events and watched as the wing honored its Airmen.

With the venerable hangar unavailable due to construction and renovations that began last fall, wing protocol teamed with the first sergeants to hold the dinner at the club. More than 135 people attended.

In addition to the annual wing awards, senior leadership inducted the wing’s honorary commander, Richard Rege, who’s the superintendent of schools for Chicopee.

Rege is the wing’s fourth honorary commander. The Honorary Commander Program encourages the exchange of ideas, experiences, and friendships between Westover leadership and key members of the local community.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled to accept the position of honorary commander of the 439th Airlift Wing,” Rege said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to ‘give back’ to the many service members who willingly deal with the complexities of balancing their civilian lives with their military obligations in order to protect and defend our country every day!”
