Maintenance group leadership formally inactivated the 439th Maintenance Operations Squadron and designated it as the 439th Maintenance Operations Section, under MXG, during a ceremony at Hangar 7, Oct. 26.

Maj. Todd Meyers, former MOS commander, relinquished command of the unit to Col. Kerry Kohler, 439th MXG commander. Currently, no section commander has been appointed pending a decision from Air Force Reserve Command.

"Jobs you are doing don't change, you'll still be part of the best maintenance group in the Air Force and part of the best wing", Maj. Meyers told the group of Airmen at the inactivation ceremony.

In March 2002, Air Force senior leadership directed the establishment of a new combat wing organization structure that standardized operations to enhance expeditionary capabilities. As a result of this directive, the 439th Logistics Support Squadron was designated the 439th MOS.

Originally known as the 439th Material Squadron, the 439th MOS was activated Dec. 27, 1965 and deactivated in December 1968. More than three decades later, in September 2003, the maintenance operations squadron was once again activated and remained operational until the recent inactivation.

The restructure was established to enable the maintenance group to focus on balancing sortie production and increasing the health of the C-5 fleet.

These changes will have no major effects on the men and women attached to the former unit.
