Patriot Wing units take AF, AFRC awards Published April 17, 2014 WESTOVER AIR RESERVE BASE, Mass. -- Military and civilians at Westover continued to earn Air Force and command-level recognition in March. The combined 439th Civil Engineering Squadron and 439th Mission Support Group base civil engineering staff won the 2013 Air Force Outstanding Civil Engineer Unit, (air reserve component category). With more than 350 military and civilians on its combined team, CE oversees the infrastructure of the nation's largest Air Force Reserve base, which includes $1.4 billion in assets and 5,500 people. Among its achievements, the CE community executed $33 million in airfield projects in FY 13, launched a $24 million Defense Logistics Agency Military Construction project to upgrade the 60-year old fuel hydrant system which will refuel C-5s four times faster, and guided the $5.5 million design and installation of the largest C-5 mobile tail enclosure - improving the maintenance work center's capabilities. Other unit award highlights: -- 439th AW Drug Demand Reduction Program, 2012 Outstanding Air Force Reserve Command Base-Level DDRP: Among the team's accomplishments was the collection of 616 military specimens, 172 civilian, and 44 pre-employment specimens with no untestable samples for FY 2012. They developed and distributed brochures to new members attending the Welcome Center briefings that inform hundreds of reservists joining the wing. The DDRP staff participated in the 2012 Hispanic Youth Symposium and the Kids of Courage visit in the Base Hangar, where they set up a booth and provided fatal vision goggles that accurately simulated the side effects of drinking too much alcohol.
