Westover firefighters responded to a mutual-aid request from Chicopee and were on scene, within 8 minutes. Westover was contacted because of their proximity to the incident and their foam trailer that is designed to extinguish fires from jet fuel. Officials believed the business, Bendag Co., located approximately one mile off base, contained large amounts of solvents and tire shreddings. During the fire, Westover assisted Springfield, Holyoke and Chicopee firefighters already on scene. Westover responded with a fire truck and crew initially and then followed up with the 1000 gallon foam trailer. Westover send a total of seven people to assist in fighting the blaze. Firefighters worked until 12:21 a.m. to extinguish the fire. No injuries have been reported. The cause remains under investigation by the Chicopee Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall's office.
