Westover Patriots excell at Patriot Sands

The last C-5B in the Air Force inventory takes off from Westover Jan. 18. The aircraft, tail number 87-0043, headed to Lockheed-Martin to get its second life as a modernized C-5M. The plane rose into the morning fog, as vapor and clouds clustered around its wings.
439th Airlift Wing
MSgt. Thomas Pitts, NCOIC of the 439th Maintenance Squadron's Non-destructive inspection stands over the support bracket basting in the penetrant chemicals, which will reveal any cracks or defects in the metal before being put on the C-5.
A blue-wax test model of the support bracket is being held by TSgt. Richard Towlson, assistant NCOIC of the Machine shop and at his feet is the 100 lb. block of metal, that is similar to the one used to make the bracket.
Blue prints being checked and re-checked by TSgt. Richard Towlson making sure the elevator support bracket is machined to the exact specifications. This newest Westover manufactured part will make the oldest C-5A in the fleet fully mission capable once again.

Raphael Marrero prepares the American flag to present to the deceased veteran's daughter and family. The base honor guard covers a massive territory in New England and New York. Last year, the team conducted 544 funerals.
