The last C-5B in the Air Force inventory takes off from Westover Jan. 18. The aircraft, tail number 87-0043, headed to Lockheed-Martin to get its second life as a modernized C-5M. The plane rose into the morning fog, as vapor and clouds clustered around its wings.
Mr. Gary Surozenski, a metal technician, in the 439th Maintenance Squadron, sets up the milling machine with the CAD data instructions to create the new C-5 elevator support bracket.
This is the 100 pound hunk of aluminum that will be machined down by the Westover maintainers into a six pound C-5 elevator support bracket.
